Crime Watch

  1. If you see anything SUSPICIOUS call 911. Anything that seems out of the ordinary for our neighborhood is considered suspicious. Strange people, strange cars, cars driving slowly down the alley that you do not recognize, etc.
  2. It is best to turn your outside lights on when the sun goes down and turn them off when the sun comes up. You can purchase sensors for your lights at home depot that will do this for you. The more lit the neighborhood is the more likely thieves and burglars will go elsewhere.
  3. Motion detector lights are not the best because a potential burglar could unscrew the light during the day and then the light would not come on when they come back to rob your house or peek in your windows.
  4. If you leave town stop your paper and mail or have a neighbor pick them up. Also either use timers on your indoor lights or have your neighbor turn different lights on and off while you are away.
  5. Do not keep your garage door opener in your car. If it is not built into your car, when you leave your car take it with you. If your garage door opener is built into your car it is best to go to Home Depot and purchase a garage door fob that you can keep on your key ring. Then deprogram your visor garage opener. This way if your car is stolen the thieves will not have ready access to get in your garage.
  6. Keep your garage doors closed if you are not out in back. If your neighbor has their garage door open and you do not see them let them know the garage door is open.
  7. Keep the door from your house to the garage locked.
  8. If you would like an assessment of how to “burglar proof” your house – the Plano Police Department will come to your house at no charge to you and go through your house with you.
  9. The recent rash of car thefts may have been about expensive rims.
  10. Do not keep anything valuable in your car and do leave items out for a burglar to see through the car windows.
  11. When the sun goes down close your blinds!! It only takes a small opening of a blind for a peeping tom to see into your house. You can see what they would see by going outside at night and looking through your own windows. If your outside lights are on a peeping tom is less likely to look through your windows.
